Sunderland City 10k Logo

redspottedhanky.com is once again sponsoring the inaugural Sunderland city 10K run on 6th May. And because of last year's succes, we'll also be welcoming the first ever Marathon of The North on the same day.

With thousands of people expected to run (and attend), we’re confident that this year's event is going to be even more successful than last year. Plus, in addition to the 10K Run, the Junior Run and all the other weekend activities we've got going on, 2012 will welcome the first ever Marathon of The North!

Up and running

Sunderland City 10k

For families and fun runners to experienced club and elite athletes, the event caters for all ages and abilities. It will show the city off in all its glory taking in Sunderland’s iconic landmarks including the Stadium of Light, Wearmouth Bridge and the Sunderland Marina. We’re expecting thousands of people to come along and redspottedhanky.com will be helping people travel from right across the country to take part in the run.

The Marathon of the North

Sunderland City 10K

For the more experienced runners, The Marathon of The North is planned to be a wonderful addition to the portfolio of major events hosted by the City of Sunderland and will give the people of the region another great day out.

The course will incorporate the acclaimed 10K route and will provide a great opportunity for good race times as well as stunning coastal views. Provisional start time is 9.15am May 6th 2012 and the Sunderland City 10K will start one hour later.

Running for charity

Sunderland City 10K

As well as giving thousands of people the opportunity to come together and enjoy a great day out, the Sunderland 10K city run and The Marathon of the North will be aiming to raise money for local charities as well as supporting Railway Children, our partner charity. So please get your Vaseline out, trainers on and help to raise money for some great causes.

The run starts and finishes at Sunderland AFC’s famous Stadium of Light. Crossing the River Wear it heads south through the central shopping district and through Mowbray Park. Back into the city and through fashionable Sunniside, the route re-crosses the Wear and passes through the University of Sunderland campus and on to the National Glass Centre. Runners will reach the sea front at Sunderland Marina, pass St Peter’s Church (Candidate World Heritage Site) before crossing the line at the Stadium of Light. 10K goal completed! The Marathon of the North will incorporate the the same route, and a lot more!

We couldn't have asked for a better day. Maybe a little hot for some runners, but was brilliant from start to finish. Everyone seemed to have a great day, whether running the race or at the redspottedhanky.com funzone.
