According to ATOC – the Association of Train Operating Companies – 3 per cent more first class tickets have been bought over the last year compared to the year before, even though politicians and some businessmen have cut down on first class travel in a bid to lower their much-scrutinised expenses.
In fact, first class ticket sales have rocketed from 5 million to 5.8 million as savvy-savers have turned away from the traditional booking office to find cheap tickets online.
Now, there’s more people travelling first class than did in the 1920′s when first class train travel was at its Art Deco best – think gilded carriages, fine bone china, and crisp iron-flattened newspapers.
ATOC believes the reason first class train tickets are more popular, is that more people are indulging in an affordable upgrade while bolting to great UK destinations for holidays or city breaks.
The organisation has reported that more people have been tempted to travel first class and start their holiday early as train companies have renovated swanky first class stations across the country, upgraded on-board Wi-Fi systems, improved catering options and refurbished first class carriages to make them much more comfortable.
And with school summer holidays and warmer weather approaching, it seems likely that even more passengers will start their holidays as soon as they get on the train by stepping into the first class carriage.
