Whether you’re planning to run, jog, walk or limp your way to the finish line, get to the Great South Run on Sunday 30 October 2011 by train. Check our journey planner for cheap tickets to Portsmouth.

With over 54,000 runners pounding pavement and fundraising for more than fifty charities, the Great South Run has been described as one of the world’s leading ten-mile running events.

And you could be there to run – or just cheer on the fit, the brave and the fundraising – by taking the train to the waterfront city of Portsmouth.

The course is known for being flat and friendly for runners, so it’s the perfect race for anyone pounding pavement for the first time.

The ten-mile route kicks off on the Southsea Common, and takes runners past some of the best and most beautiful sights in Portsmouth before crossing the finish line.

Runners can also lace up for the 5k run, a shorter route for the same great cause, and a junior run for children ages 3 to 15 who want to feel the wind in their hair.

As one of the most popular running events in Europe, the Great South Run attracts contestants from all walks of life, and celebrities have been known to show up and break a sweat on the race course for charity.

This year, Abel Kirui – world marathon champion and gold medal favourite for the 2012 Olympic games – will also compete in the Great South Run, alongside other famous faces like Holby City’s Phoebe Thomas, who plays Maria Kendall, BBC South presenter Naomi House and Eastenders’ Neil McDermott, who plays Ryan Malloy.

It’s easy to get to run too – with cheap trains going straight to Portsmouth.

What’s more, you could help raise even more money by contributing the money you’ve saved on train travel to charitable causes supported by the GSR, including Macmillan Cancer Support, the Alzheimers Society, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and The Stroke Association.

Go above and beyond by donating your redspottedhanky loyalty points to Railway Children – a charity that helps protect children living on the streets in Britain, India and Africa.
