Basil Fawlty might not like us mentioning the war, but the forties have an appeal that just can’t be forgotten.

And ’40s fans are in for a treat this weekend as Whitby, Grosmont and Pickering are all hosting ‘Railway in Wartime’ events this weekend – where there’ll be Lindy hopping, ’40s fashions, vintage steam trains, ration recipes and more.

According to Rail.co.uk, visitors will be able to stand on the platforms like a ’40s forces’ sweetheart or take a ride on vintage steam trains that would have been in use during the war.

Visitors can even try cramming into a vintage lifeboat that would have been in service on war cruisers and U-boat destroyers.

What’s more, there’ll be street parades and vintage vehicles on display, as well as actors representing what life was really like for soldiers and civillians during the Second World War.

All these events are easy to get to by train too. Simply take the train to Whitby or Middlesbrough and hop on the bus for Grosmont and Pickering.

And don’t forget to stop back by our blog and let us know how it went!
