Take the train … for a festive city break

Posted on

Have yourself a very merry Christmas by bolting to some of Blighty’s best cities for the festive season. Forget fussing over the in-laws or stuffing a turkey – take the train to London, Edinburgh or York, check into your hotel and discover your very own winter wonderland. Just make sure to check our journey planner for cheap train tickets before you hop on board.

Take the train to … London

London might have been the setting for the Dickens’ classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’, but it’s certainly not a frugal spot or the place to be for bah-humbugs. In fact, London is one of the ultimate destinations for a festive break – thanks to its great shopping, Michelin starred restaurants and outdoor ice rinks.

Just take the train to London and head to Bond Street, Saville Row, Oxford Street, Regent Street or the King’s Road – all firm festive shopping favourites. And head to the Natural History Museum or the Tower of London if you’re looking to ice skate outdoors.

Take the train to … Edinburgh

The hub of Scotland’s world-famous Hogmanay celebrations, Edinburgh is the perfect place to see in the New Year.

Just take the train to Edinburgh‘s Waverly Station and turn onto Princes Street Gardens for a sparkling Christmas Market and New Year fun fair. Walk along the Royal Mile or up to Edinburgh Castle for a fantastic view of Edinburgh’s legendary New Year street parties.

If you can’t secure a ticket to the festivities, why not settle into a cosy pub down one of Edinburgh Old Town’s many cobbled streets, and enjoy a dram or two while the New Year’s rung in? Or, if you’d like to keep things decidedly glam and swanky, why not try a cocktail bar or boutique hotel on trendy George Street?

But remember, Edinburgh’s not just for New Year revellers. You’ll also find Michelin starred restaurants – perfect if you’re looking for the poshest of Christmas dinners – and boutique Christmas shopping so you can grab some great last minute gifts.

Take the train to … York

Voted Britain’s prettiest city, ahead of Oxford, London and Edinburgh, York is the perfect place for a festive get-away if you’re looking for old world charm, cobbled streets and cosy pubs overlooking frost-tipped countryside.

Just take the train to York and head to St Helen’s Square where you’ll find a Christmas tree towering over the historic city. You’ll also find an outdoor ice rink and live reindeer at the McArthur Glen Designer outlet, and you can listen to choristers singing Christmas carols at the York’s historic cathedral. And if you head to York a little earlier (10 -12 December), you’ll come across angelic ice sculptures throughout the city.

Which city would you like to bolt to this Christmas and New Year?
