What is the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup is a golfing tournament contested every two years, between Team Europe and Team USA. It was originally contested between the UK and the US. It’s named after Sam Ryder, an English businessman and enthusiastic amateur who provided the cup.

How long does the Ryder Cup last?

The Ryder Cup lasts for three days, starting on Tuesday September 23 and finishing on Sunday September 28. The tournament itself lasts for the traditional Friday-Sunday period at the end of the week. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are practice days.

Who are in the two teams?

Team Europe, which currently holds the Ryder Cup after a dramatic victory at the Illinois Medinah Country Club, is captained by Paul McGinley. Keep your eyes on Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy. Team USA, which will be looking to rectify its 2012 collapse, is headed up by Tom Watson. Look out for Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson.

What should I wear?

The beautiful Gleneagles Hotel course is subject to the usual vagaries of Scottish weather! Pack for sun, prepare for rain. We’d recommend a course survival kit including a sweater and waterproofs. There is an informal dress code for the course, which prefers no jeans or tracksuit trousers.

Where is the Gleneagles Hotel?

Gleneagles is in Auchterader, Perthshire. The hotel is situated near to the A9 road (just off the M90), and is on the main London to Inverness railway line. Trains leave from London King’s Cross, and arrive at Gleneagles station less than six hours later. You can get cheap train tickets for Gleneagles by booking through redspottedhanky.com. We can also arrange car hire if you prefer to drive.

Can I play the Ryder Cup course?

You can’t play the course while the tournament is in progress, but Gleneagles Hotel is offering stay and play packages throughout October. The Ryder Cup course is only open to members, local residents and hotel guests during this time.

Is there anything else going on?

Yes! On Wednesday 24 September, the SSE Hydro in Glasgow is hosting the Ryder Cup Gala Concert. The Concert includes the official procession of the two teams, and there are loads of top acts booked to get you in the mood for a great weekend. Nile Rodgers (the main man from Chic) and Texas are headlining, plus you’ve got Eddi Reader, Jake Bugg and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Rock on.
