Wicked has been enchanting fans of classic movie The Wizard of Oz since 2003. The show hit the West End in 2006, and it’s been one of its biggest sellers ever since. Wicked – which isn’t suitable for younger fans, thanks to its more adult themes – tells the tale of the Witches of Oz, Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. Just how did the Wicked Witch get her name? And what happened in Oz before Dorothy got there? Based on a 1995 novel of the same name, Wicked weaves toe-tapping hits with some sharp social commentary to deliver a unique theatrical experi-ence. First class.

Billy Elliot

The age-old tale of following your dreams gets an uplifting makeover in this classic story of a young northern boy who secretly indulges his passion for ballet. Another musical based on a film, Billy Elliot is as home grown as they come. Rip-roaring performances from a series of captivating young leads have had audiences clapping, laughing and weeping in the stalls for nearly a decade, and with four Olivier Awards under its belt it’s easy to see why the Telegraph hailed it as the greatest British musical of all time. Dads: forget your preconceptions and go. You’ll cry like babies.

Les Miserables

OK, so this one isn’t based on a movie – but like the other top picks it’s got a big link to the silver screen, thanks to Tom (King’s Speech) Hooper’s epic 2012 version. The stage show’s even more immense than the film, and its popularity knows no bounds: it’s been going continuously in the West End since 1985, making it the longest-running stage musical in town. Expect epic sets and tear-inducing performances, particularly from Fantine, whose “I Dreamed a Dream” has become one of the most famous laments in the history of musical theatre.
