Top 10 Theatre Shows for Autumn (Including top picks for Halloween) has partnered with Shows in London who are recommending their top theatre productions for the autumn. With the weather getting colder, and the dark days approaching, there isn’t a more perfect time to get settled in a theatre. Shows in London have shared their top ten theatre productions for this time of year, with some Halloween spectaculars thrown in too. They’re not to be missed.

1. Jersey Boys

A sensational production to make you both laugh and cry, that follows the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons; told from the perspective of each of the four band members. Containing mobs, heartaches and triumphs, the internationally acclaimed hit musical is one to be watched. Be warned, there is some bad language, the kind you’d expect from a bunch of Jersey Boys.

2. Billy Elliot

It’s been ten years since Billy Elliot the Musical first graced the stage and is still a fan favourite today. Set in a northern mining town against the background of the 1984/”85 miners’ strike, the story follows a young boy’s struggle to leave the boxing ring and become a ballet dancer. With a score written by Elton John and a story that’s captured the hearts of millions worldwide, there’s no better time to catch the show.

3. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The Roald Dahl classic has been re-imagined for the stage, with direction from Academy Award winning director, Sam Mendes. Expect Oompa Loompas, a weird and wonderful Willy Wonka, chocolate waterfalls and much more. Watch as the childhood classic is bought to life in front of your very eyes. No golden ticket necessary.

4. The Lion King

Acclaimed director Julie Taymor has taken the Disney classic and turned it into an outstanding stage production that’s a viewing pleasure. Now in its 16th year, this show is much-loved by audiences of all ages. With incredible costumes and stunning stage design the story of Simba is brought to life in a spectacular fashion.

5. The Book of Mormon

This show follows the story of young Mormons Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, two boys who are coming of age and sent to Uganda on a two year mission. Written by the creators of South Park along with Avenue Q collaborator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon is not for the faint hearted; expect plenty of bad language, vulgar humour and offensive satire.

6. Mamma Mia!

The ultimate feel-good show, the story and music of Mamma Mia! Will leave you laughing and dancing in your seat. Based on the classic ABBA hits, this heart-warming musical is set on a Greek island paradise and follows a girl in search of her father on the eve of her wedding. Become a Dancing Queen for the evening and Take a chance on a fantastic night out.

7. Kinky Boots

Taking you from the factory floor to glamourous catwalks, watch how a fabulous performer in need of sturdy new stilettos saves the family business of Price & Son. With songs written by the iconic Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is a joyous musical about the celebration of friendship and the belief you can change the world. With six Tony Awards, we’re pretty sure you’ll find this boot will fit.

8. Wicked Halloween Pick

Follow the fantastic prequel to the Wizard of Oz and learn the untold story about The Wicked Witch of the West. Cast your preconceived perceptions aside and get ready to be astounded as the truth behind one of world’s most classic villains is revealed. It’s a Halloween must-see that will have you wanting to go back at any time of the year.

9. Thriller Live! Halloween Pick

A tribute to the late Michael Jackson, Thriller Live! celebrates the singer’s life and music, including both his solo career and younger years with the Jackson 5. Expect non-stop hits that pay homage to Michael Jackson’s legendary live performances and dance moves. Currently in its 7th year, this show shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

10. The Phantom of the Opera Halloween Pick

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical is a must-see this Halloween. Almost 30 years since its opening, the show has been watched by over 130 million people. Both haunting and romantic, this production captures the love story between a young woman falling for a misguided, misunderstood and disfigured man. You’ll definitely be left with chills.
