Taking care of travel needs across the Liverpool and Merseyside region, Merseyrail operates electrical train services on both sides of the Mersey River, along the former Northern and Wirral lines.

Merseyrail Electric Ltd owns 66 of the 67 stations serviced by Merseyrail trains, calling at popular destinations such as Southport, Liverpool Lime Street, Ormskirk, Ellesmere Port, New Brighton, Preston, Chester, West Kirby and Hunts Cross. Merseyrail also operates services to four underground stations in Liverpool city centre, as well as a service to Liverpool South Parkway for connections to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

All Merseyrail trains welcome passengers with bikes, who can find dedicated cycle storage areas at each end of the train. Cyclists are encouraged not to bring cycles onto trains during peak travel times however, as this can cause congestion.
